British industrial designer Christopher Dresser (1834–1904) was a pioneer of a modern aesthetic that was radical at that time. An outspoken proponent of modern design, Dresser designed fabrics, metalwork and ceramics and his contributions to the understanding of new domestic product design in the industrial age were vast.

Dresser published a number of influential books throughout his career including this one about interior decoration. He wrote: “My book is intended to help the decorator and to enable those who live in decorated houses to judge, to an extent, the merit of the ornament around them.”
