The Aibo was Sony’s first venture into domestic entertainment robots and was principally designed as a robotic companion.

Through the 1990s new toy products incorporated more compact and cheaper computer controlled technologies (including robot control software and mechanisms combined with machine intelligence programming).

The Aibo uses these technologies to develop a bond with the user. Aibo can track and interact with a coloured ball, simulating the behaviour of a real dog playing. The movement and behaviour of Aibo advance as the user spends more time interacting with it. An illusion of personality emerges from the zoomorphic characteristics and movement.
